The Business Traveller ‘Cellar in the Sky’ Awards
Monday 12 February 2024
By Annie Towner, Director - Flametree Wines
Now in its 38th year, ‘Cellar in the Sky’ has been running since 1985
and celebrates the best business and first class wines served by airlines
around the world on their flights. The competition is open to any carrier that
serves wine in business or first class on mid- or long-haul routes.
Each airline is invited to enter two reds, two whites, a rosé, a
sparkling, and a fortified or dessert wine from both cabins. They can compete
in as many categories as they like but to be eligible for the Best Overall
Cellar award, they must enter at least one red, white, and sparkling. For 2023,
30 airlines entered.
This year Qantas again submitted the Flametree SRS Chardonnay (2022) as one of its 2 white wine entrants. We are excited to share that our wine was awarded a GOLD MEDAL in the ‘Business Class White Wine’ category with a score of 96 points; the highest score awarded across all awards. The only other wine that received the highest score of 96 points was in the ‘First Class Sparkling’ category, also submitted by Qantas - Champagne Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blanc 2008.
Qantas has had amazing success in the awards overall winning Gold
medals in a total of nine categories, for Best Business Class White, Best
Business Class Red, Best Business Class Cellar, Best First Class Sparkling,
Best First Class White, Best First Class Red, Best First Class Fortified /
Dessert Wine, Best First Class Cellar, and Best Overall Cellar.
Naturally, we are very proud to be a preferred partner and supplier of wine to Qantas.
This is for everyone who enjoys a great West Australian Chardonnay from Margaret River.
Cheers!
